Many organizations form small groups so individuals can better connect and form friendships. Christian organizations are no exception. If you’re part of an adult Christian small group and want to do fun activities together to create those friendships, we can help. We provide several ideas below that you can try during or outside your normal meeting time so you can all spend time together and bond.
Question-and-Answer Icebreakers
If the church or other Christian organization just formed your group, everyone is probably meeting for the first time. Take some time out of your normal meeting schedule to get to know one another with question-and-answer icebreakers. These are fun and a great way to learn about each other. You can repeat this activity regularly with more in-depth questions or with light questions when new members join your group.
Here are a few great light questions to ask:
- What three objects would you want to bring to a desert island?
- Who from history would you like to interview?
- What one music genre would you like to listen to for one year?
Some more serious questions can focus on favorite childhood memories, when members first learned about God, and best and serious moments from the previous week.
Bible Games
Making learning fun is one of the best ways to create great Sunday school lessons. If your small group is a Sunday school class or you learn similar content together, Bible games are a great way to incorporate fun into the lessons. There are various Bible games you can play depending on the supplies available and how much time you have.
Bible hangman is one of the easiest games. Use paper or a whiteboard and draw enough blanks for each letter of a Biblical citation, short verse, or Bible character. Participants will call out letters until they can guess the phrase or you’ve drawn a hangman. Bible Pictionary is another fun option. Divide the group into two teams and have each team pick a Bible story or character from a bowl. The person who picks will draw out the scene or character on a large piece of paper or whiteboard for their team. If they guess correctly before the clock runs out, they get a point. Offer fun, small prizes like candy or bookmarks to incentive these games.
Traveling Activities
Your group can do the activities above during normal meeting times. Sometimes, it’s fun to get together outside the normal meeting time and space too. Traveling activities describe various options your group can pick from depending on what everyone likes to do. You could go bowling, plan a regular meetup at a local coffee shop for casual conversations, or host various celebrations in each other’s homes for birthdays and holidays. Customize these activities for the people in your group so everyone can have a good time.
There are various fun activities that any group, including adult Christian small groups, can do together. Playing games and finding other ways to spend time together can help your meetings go quicker and turn acquaintances into lasting friendships.
